The Prince, the Carousel, and the Giant Wiener Schnitzel: My Night at La Giostra, Florence

Florence is a city full of art, romance, and food that makes your heart skip a beat—and La Giostra somehow captures all three. I’ve been here many times, always for my birthday or when I want to impress friends from out of town. This cozy restaurant welcomes you with a complimentary glass of bubbles and starter, and from the moment you sit down, you’re enveloped in a romantic, storybook atmosphere. From pear ravioli to Bistecca alla fiorentina to the legendary oversized Wiener schnitzel, every visit is unforgettable—especially when paired with a wine selection that’s as impressive as the setting.

Why “La Giostra”?

The name “La Giostra” literally means “carousel” or “merry-go-round”. The space once actually housed a carousel, and today, that whimsical, joyful energy lives on in the restaurant’s playful atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where every table feels like it’s part of the fun.

Royal Connections – Soldano, the Prince

La Giostra was founded by members of the Habsburg-Lorraine family, and today, the owner, Soldano, is still a prince. The royal lineage isn’t just for show—it influences the menu, the ambiance, and the little touches that make the dining experience feel truly special.

The Legendary Wiener Schnitzel

One dish has earned La Giostra near-mythical status: the Wiener schnitzel. It’s huge, and according to the staff, only one person has ever finished it solo—a woman. This isn’t just food; it’s a challenge, a conversation starter, and a story you’ll tell long after the meal is over.

Tuscan Classics & Pear Ravioli

Of course, La Giostra also serves classic Tuscan dishes like pear ravioli and bistecca alla fiorentina, each carefully crafted and paired with local wines. Combined with the welcome glass of bubbles and starter, the experience starts on a high note and only gets better.

Dining Atmosphere & Magic

From candlelit tables to sparkling chandeliers, La Giostra perfectly blends Tuscan charm, Habsburg heritage, and merry-go-round whimsy. It’s the kind of place where history, romance, and food meet, creating a night you’ll never forget.
