Sunday Lunches in Italy

Where time slows down

In Italy, Sunday isn’t just the end of the week — it’s a ritual.

By late morning, kitchens come alive. Garlic sizzles in olive oil, sauce simmers slowly, and someone is already tasting it “just to check.” Growing up, I knew nothing could interrupt la domenica. Family came first. Always.

Pasta, noise, and togetherness

Wherever you are in Italy, Sunday lunch starts with pasta. There are opinions about the sauce, debates about salt, and plenty of wine poured generously.

It’s loud. It’s chaotic. It’s warm.

More than a meal

Lunch stretches for hours — pasta, meat, dessert, espresso. No one rushes. No one checks the time.

For me, Sunday lunch was never just about food. It was about belonging. About sitting at a crowded table and knowing this is what home feels like.

Here’s a u list of great spots in Florence for a long, lazy Sunday lunch perfect for lingering over wine and courses without rushing:

Timeless Sunday Lunch Spots

  • Trattoria Angiolino- Classic Tuscan trattoria in Oltrarno with a hearty menu of antipasti, pastas like pappa al pomodoro, and grill selections — ideal for slow lunches and local wine pairing. Open for Sunday lunch typically 12:00–15:00.
  • Osteria Belle Donne– Cozy osteria in the historic centre with traditional Tuscan dishes and a warm, intimate vibe — perfect for multiple courses and good conversation over wine.
  • La Beppa Fioraia– Loved for its garden seating and big taglieri, grilled meats and house wines — great for a long Sunday lunch outdoors when the weather cooperates.
  • Osteria Santo Spirito – Lively spot in Piazza Santo Spirito with generous portions and a fun, sociable atmosphere for a slower lunch.
  • La Buchetta – A beloved Tuscan restaurant in the heart of Florence open all day from 12 pm to 11 pm on Sundays, with excellent pasta espcially their Gnocchi steaks like bistecca alla fiorentina, great wines and an atmosphere inviting you to stay awhile.
